Mondriaan is the specialist mental health institution for South Limburg, headquartered in Heerlen (J.F. Kennedylaan 301). It offers esketamine nasal spray as an add-on to an oral antidepressant for depression in which three earlier medication steps failed: at least two different antidepressants plus an augmentation strategy such as lithium, mirtazapine or an antipsychotic gave no or insufficient improvement. The treatment is organised as day care: patients spend a half day or day at Mondriaan's day hospital in Maastricht and self-administer the spray with a pump device. The schedule runs from twice weekly (4 weeks) via weekly sessions to a maintenance phase of once a week down to once every three weeks; coordination runs via the treating psychiatrist (088 506 9260).

Who qualifies for esketamine at Mondriaan?

People whose depression did not improve (enough) after three treatment steps: at least two different antidepressants and an add-on strategy such as lithium, mirtazapine or an antipsychotic. You keep taking an antidepressant during the esketamine treatment.

What does a session look like?

You spend a half day or day at the day hospital in Maastricht and administer the esketamine yourself with a nasal spray pump, similar to a regular nasal spray.

How long does the treatment take?

First 4 weeks with 2 sessions per week; with sufficient response 4 more weeks at 1 session per week, after which the frequency is reduced to a maintenance level between once a week and once every 3 weeks.

How is the treatment arranged?

Coordination runs via the treating psychiatrist; the esketamine coordination team is reachable on 088 506 9260.
