Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) has operated an esketamine outpatient clinic within its psychiatry department since 1 July 2024 — the only hospital in the region with such a clinic and, per ZGT, the second largest in the Netherlands. The esketamine nasal spray is offered to people with difficult-to-treat depression for whom standard treatments yield insufficient results; only a small group of patients qualifies. In the first weeks patients come to the clinic twice a week, after which the frequency of maintenance treatments is assessed. Blood pressure and general health are closely monitored during treatments. ZGT states that when esketamine is used early in treatment according to protocol, symptoms clearly decrease in more than half of these patients. The department also offers ECT and vagus nerve stimulation.
