Treatment & access

About this provider

GGz Centraal is a specialist mental health institution for the central Netherlands (Flevoland, Eemland, Veluwe). All esketamine nasal spray administrations take place at its Veldwijk site in Ermelo, always on Tuesday and/or Friday mornings. Patients are referred by their GP or psychiatrist, then invited for an intake to check eligibility: at least three earlier treatments (for example psychotherapy, an antidepressant and an augmentation) are required, and an oral antidepressant must be continued because insurers reimburse esketamine only as an add-on. Patients self-administer the spray under supervision and stay 1-2 hours for observation; blood pressure is measured before every session.

Services & programs

  • Esketamine nasal spray at location Veldwijk (Ermelo), Tuesday and/or Friday mornings: first 4 weeks 2 sessions per week; continued only on clear improvement, then 4 weeks of weekly sessions, then a maintenance phase at the lowest possible frequency (for example once every 2-3 weeks)
  • Self-administration of the spray under supervision, followed by 1-2 hours of observation; blood pressure check before every administration
  • Esketamine only as add-on to an ongoing oral antidepressant, in line with reimbursement conditions
  • Participation in the national ENC-NL consortium (coordinated by Radboudumc), with optional anonymised sharing of treatment outcomes

Common questions

How do I get this treatment at GGz Centraal?

Your GP or psychiatrist refers you; you are then invited for an intake at which eligibility and any exclusion reasons are checked.

Who is excluded?

People with severely elevated blood pressure, a recent heart attack or stroke, a bipolar disorder diagnosis, pregnancy, or poorly treatable epilepsy.

What does a session look like?

At Veldwijk in Ermelo you administer the spray yourself under supervision, after a blood pressure check, and remain 1-2 hours for observation. You should not drive afterwards, so someone must bring and collect you; later in the trajectory travelling by public transport may be possible.

Do I keep taking my antidepressant?

Yes. Health insurers currently reimburse esketamine only as an addition to an antidepressant, so you must use one during the treatment. Questions can be sent to esketaminewerkgroep@ggzcentraal.nl.

Looking at alternatives? The same reimbursed esketamine programme runs at other ENC-NL consortium centers throughout the Netherlands; private routes are rare.
