Universitäre Psychiatrische Kliniken (UPK) Basel is the university psychiatric hospital for the Basel region, based at Wilhelm Klein-Strasse 27. Its Centre for Affective, Stress and Sleep Disorders (ZASS) runs an outpatient clinic for affective disorders and interventional psychiatry, offering outpatient ketamine-based therapy and electroconvulsive therapy for severe and difficult-to-treat depression, alongside inpatient wards for depression and bipolar disorders. Referrals to the outpatient ketamine programme are made by physicians via the ZASS secretariat, and a 24-hour central admission service operates on campus.

How do I access ketamine-based treatment at UPK Basel?

UPK states that outpatient ketamine therapy at the ZASS centre is arranged via specialist physician referral (zass@upk.ch or the secretariat on +41 61 325 50 97). For nasal esketamine (Spravato) under Swiss basic insurance, a treating psychiatrist must confirm eligibility and obtain the insurer's cost approval (Kostengutsprache) before the first dose.

Is Spravato reimbursed by Swiss basic insurance (OKP)?

Yes, under a Limitatio: adults 18-74 with a depressive episode that has not responded to at least two antidepressants plus one augmentation attempt, illness severity CGI-S of 5 or more, prior insurer approval before the first dose, and reimbursement for a maximum of 10 months.
