The Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich (PUK) runs a dedicated ketamine and S-ketamine treatment service within its Ambulatorium Second Opinion Depression, aimed at people whose depression has not responded to at least two adequate treatment attempts in the current episode. PUK offers time-limited treatment with the approved S-ketamine nasal spray (Spravato) or racemic ketamine where indicated, alongside second-opinion assessments, electroconvulsive therapy and a psilocybin-assisted therapy programme. Registration for the specialised depression consultation is by email with a referral letter from a specialist physician.

Who qualifies for ketamine or S-ketamine treatment at PUK?

The service targets patients with treatment-resistant depression, defined by PUK as at least two unsuccessful adequate treatment attempts in the current episode. For OKP-reimbursed Spravato, the Swiss Limitatio additionally requires age 18-74, failure of at least two antidepressants plus one augmentation attempt, CGI-S of 5 or higher, prior insurer approval (Kostengutsprache) and a 10-month maximum.

How do I register for the depression second-opinion service?

Registration is exclusively by email, and PUK requests a referral letter from a specialist physician. The clinic then assesses whether specialised options such as S-ketamine, ECT or other procedures could improve your situation.

Is treatment at PUK time-limited?

Yes. PUK describes its ketamine and S-ketamine offer as a time-limited treatment provided when appropriately indicated, which is consistent with the Swiss reimbursement limit of a maximum of 10 months of Spravato therapy.
