GGZ Rivierduinen, a regional mental health institution in the Leiden area, started esketamine treatments in 2025 at its new esketamine outpatient clinic in Leiden. The treatment is intended for adults struggling with depression for whom other medication or therapies do not help sufficiently. During a session the esketamine is sprayed three times into both nostrils; clients describe an intense altered experience for roughly forty minutes and remain at the clinic until the effects subside, going home after about two hours. The total treatment lasts on average three to six months and consists of three phases. How quickly the medication takes effect differs per client.

Who is the esketamine treatment for?

What happens during a treatment session?

The medication is sprayed three times into both nostrils. The experience can feel intense for about forty minutes, with heightened senses; clients rest in a reclining chair in the treatment room and may go home after about two hours, when the intense feeling has decreased.
