Reinier van Arkel's esketamine team treats adults (18+) with moderate to severe depression that has not responded sufficiently to other treatments such as medication and talking therapies. The esketamine nasal spray is administered at the Jeroen Bosch Hospital in 's-Hertogenbosch, at Reinier van Arkel's outpatient clinic for older adults and day treatment. Patients initially attend twice a week, with each visit lasting about 2.5 hours; after four weeks progress is reviewed and the number of appointments is then gradually reduced. The complete treatment takes about six months. Referral goes through the patient's own practitioner or general practitioner.

Do I need a referral?

Yes. Your own practitioner can refer you to the esketamine treatment team, which first assesses whether the treatment is suitable for you. If you think you qualify, you can discuss this with your general practitioner, or with your current practitioner if you are already in treatment for depression.

What does a treatment visit look like?

At the start you come twice a week and each visit takes about 2.5 hours.
