Universitäre Psychiatrische Dienste Bern (UPD) is the university psychiatric hospital for the Bern capital region, based at Bolligenstrasse 111. Its KIPAP competence centre (Zentrum Neuropsychiatrie) specialises in treatment-resistant depression, catatonia and neuropsychiatric illness, offering inpatient, day-clinic, outpatient and consultative care. How is esketamine treatment accessed at UPD Bern?

UPD's KIPAP centre treats treatment-resistant depression and lists intranasal esketamine among its procedures. Access to the Swiss Spravato route runs through a psychiatrist, who confirms the eligibility criteria and obtains the health insurer's cost approval (Kostengutsprache) before the first dose.

Who qualifies for reimbursed Spravato in Switzerland?

Basic insurance (OKP) covers it under a Limitatio: adults 18-74 whose current episode has not responded to at least two antidepressants plus one augmentation attempt, with CGI-S severity of 5 or more, insurer pre-approval before the first dose, and a maximum of 10 months of treatment.
