About this provider

Tagesklinik am Friesenplatz is a private day clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy in central Cologne, led by Dr. med. Christian Voß. It offers 30 day-treatment places across three small wards (maximum ten patients each) and specializes in depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and trauma-related disorders and burnout. Treatment combines high-frequency individual psychotherapy (four 50-minute sessions per week) with group, art, music and body therapy, plus biological options including off-label ketamine infusions (offered since January 2018), deep TMS, lithium augmentation and light therapy. Patients spend nights and weekends at home. The clinic describes itself as having Germany's most extensive experience and routine with ketamine infusion treatment.

About one hour of supervised rest follows; no driving on infusion days. Not published; the clinic requests cost coverage from the patient's insurer before treatment begins

Common questions

Does health insurance cover the treatment?

The clinic is a Beihilfe-eligible acute hospital recognized by the Association of Private Health Insurers (§ 4 Abs. 4 MB/KK). It applies to private insurers or the Beihilfe office for cost coverage before admission. According to the clinic's cost page, statutory (GKV) insured patients can only be admitted as self-payers; prices are provided on request with cost transparency before treatment.

How do I start treatment?

Contact usually begins with a roughly one-hour pre-examination (Voruntersuchung) by a specialist physician at the clinic, who assesses the condition and advises on the right setting. The clinic can be reached by phone at 0221 933306-0.

Is this inpatient or outpatient treatment?

It is a day clinic ('a hospital without beds'): patients attend during the day and spend nights and weekends at home. Ketamine infusions are offered exclusively as part of a day-clinic (partial inpatient) treatment plan, not as a standalone outpatient service.

What does a ketamine infusion involve?

After a physical work-up (including ECG and, where needed, cardiology or ophthalmology review), 0.5 mg/kg ketamine is infused over 45 minutes under continuous monitoring with a nurse permanently at the bedside. About an hour of rest follows; driving and operating machinery are not allowed that day. Benzodiazepines should be paused for at least 24 hours before an infusion.

Who is not eligible for ketamine treatment?

The clinic does not offer ketamine to people with a history of psychotic symptoms or an addiction disorder. Conditions that could cause complications, such as heart disease, high blood pressure or glaucoma, are excluded before treatment.

Looking at alternatives? In Germany, esketamine nasal spray (approved for treatment-resistant depression) is available at qualified psychiatric hospitals and practices and can be covered by statutory insurers; other legal routes include hospital-based ketamine programmes, clinical trials, and, in narrowly defined individual cases, compassionate-use psilocybin.
